This photograph illustrates just how dynamic the ship building industry was at Huskisson, the foreshore is a mess of building material and debris, a far cry from the area now.
There didn’t seem to be much regard for the local environment back then or it seems thought for the future.

Like all industries in those days the end product justified the ways and means, Eventually the ship building became unprofitable and faded away, leaving the area to slowly become the magnificent place we see today.

Moonee Creek Footbridge

Footbridge-over-Moona-Moona-Creek-a

Original Creek Crossing
It’s hard to imagine now but this was erected across the creek at this point probably because it’s was the shallowest and narrowest area to cross.
They must have thought it would be able to withstand floods and the ever changing entrance to Moonee Creek.

Jervis Bay electrical storm

lightning-storm-over-jervis-bay-by-rob-slater-aLong exposures.
Late last night the bay had a wide slow moving electrical storm sweep across the headlands, there wasn’t any streak lightning to be seen mostly back lit storm clouds.
There was a bright 3/4 moon high in the western sky illuminating the beach, I did a couple of long time exposure shots and here are the results.

lightning-storm-over-jervis-bay-by-rob-slater-e lightning-storm-over-jervis-bay-by-rob-slater-flightning-storm-over-jervis-bay-by-rob-slater-g

The light in the foreground is the result of the ambient moon light, except the last shot where I shone a torch into the water exposing the sand in the foreground.
Eventually the wind blew to strong causing to much blur and it was time to leave.
Jervis Bay is full of wonder if you get out and explore.

Simple things in life

hung-upSometimes the simple things in life are often the best, is very true.
Not that using an expensive digital camera and computer equipment to record this simple sculptural scene is all that simple.

New uploads to the Landscape page

I added a few more images from the local area, hopefully you might be inspired to get out and see some of this beautiful country we call the Shoalhaven.

Husky Pub - Owen St Huskisson

hp1 Jervis Bay Hotel.
The original sites hotel/pub history goes way back to 1895, when the Cambourn Family built the Jervis Bay Hotel on the same site.
1383-Owen-Street-aa Husky Pub in the 60’s
The current building was built in 1932. It underwent some gradual changes over many year but essentially stayed the same, later becoming the Iconic town symbol known by the locals as the “Husky Pub”.
1383-Owen-Street-aa-dec-2013 The Huskisson.
Changes to the pub have been an ongoing process, the recent renovations have kept the essence of the old and combined it with a new approach catering to families and holiday makers.

Thankfully the pub has weathered the development storm that has effected much of the coastal villages where old buildings with character have been pulled down for new development, the pub is now regarded as an historical building assuring it’s survival and a link to the local areas rich history.

Moving the Creswell Bell

moving-the-bell-3 Final Stage of the move.
The final stages of the Fleet Review pull out is over, after a bit of struggling, puffing and panting the heavy 200KG+ bronze bell on loan from HMAS Creswell was loaded safely onto the back of the truck.
The room is clear and ready for the next exhibition, the Summer Addition JB Art show called Endless Summer.

The bell, which originally hung in the Creswell clock tower, disappeared when the college was decommissioned between 1930 and 1958 and was considered lost until Mr David Hoskins emailed the college in 2012 solving the mystery of where the bell had been for 50 years.

Welcome grant from Veolia Mulwaree Trust.

photo-cheque-(1) The Museum would like to thank the Veolia Mulwarre Trust for the generous donation of $1790.00 to the CMC Collection Management Centre to purchase photographic equipment.
Soon the people from the Collection Management Centre who manage and look after the Museums 5000 plus collection will be undertaking a complete clean of all the artifacts on display and will be using the new photographic equipment to catalogue a comprehensive photographic record of the collection.

Because of the nature of the original building construction there have been ongoing problems with humidity levels in the museum.

These problems are being addressed and a progressive program of cleaning, restoration and stabilization is being implemented.

Stoney Creek.
If you get the chance and want to see another one of our Shoalhaven gems, head out to Booderie National Park and take the short walk out to Stoney Creek.
It’s a small clear fresh water creek that flows and bubbles over river pebbles into a small inlet that opens to the ocean take your snorkeling gear as the inlet is great to swim in.
It has a good variety of marine life. The visibility can be effected by the swell outside the inlet, but generally it’s very clear and protected.

Vintage Car Club

vintage-car-club-xmas-function-2013 Old but not forgotten.
Today the Lady Denman Museum played host to the Vintage Car Club.
The club hired the pavilion to hold their Xmas function, by the looks of the crowd they had, it was a popular event
Many of the members bought along their cars, I snapped a couple of quick shots for the blog.

Lady Denman Markets

Lady-denman-markets-dec-2013---7 Merry Christmas.First Saturday of the month and the Lady Denman market team pull together and get the place jumping, literally!!
There was a big yellow jumping castle packed with kids, there was a huge variety of stalls and entertainment on both sides of the Museum.
One of the highlights was the appearance of Santa Clause, this had all the children smiling and eager to talk to Santa.
It was a beautiful morning, the sun was out, and the stall holders must have appreciated the cover the Lady Denman Grounds offers them.
Here are a few photo’s from this morning.
The markets go all day right through to 4pm.

Notorious

notorious-at-husky-wharf-dec-2013

Your last chance to see this amazing little sail boat before it leaves.
If you want to see something quite unique I would be heading down to Huskisson Wharf to get a close up view of this unique hand made wooden ship called the Notorious.
It’s been at anchor near Collingwood Beach for the last two weeks doing repairs to rigging damaged in heavy seas coming down the coast.
They are running tours on board for a small fee Saturday and Sunday before they finally set sail down the coast to be home for Xmas. Weather permitting.
